You’ve probably heard of carbon in terms of clearing waste and managing trash, but I bet you haven’t heard of digital waste. If you have, then sustainability isn’t new to you. So what is a “carbon-negative” agency?
A carbon-negative agency is one that reduces its carbon footprint or removes more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than it emits, through its entire operational lifecycle. At Drych Digital, we are a carbon-negative, women-owned creative and digital agency that optimises our operational workflows and business decisions so we make profit while keeping our planet safer.
What's Inside
What Does That Mean In Practice?
It means we have integrated sustainability into our actual technical architecture and business logic in order to ensure that your brand’s growth (as well as ours) is efficient, impactful, and eco-conscious. This is how we do it:
1. Sustainable Infrastructure:
We use green hosting. For us to create aesthetic, functional, and optimised websites for you, we need hosting—but not just any hosting; the green kind. We use green web hosting powered by 100% renewable energy, so you are contributing to a cleaner grid and reducing fossil fuel demand, thereby making your online presence a part of the solution. An added bonus? High-quality green servers offer incredible reliability and uptime. This means your site gets to stay live 24/7.
2. Digital Sobriety and Automation:
We are a creative and digital agency, and while our operations involve a lot of tools and software, we are mindful of the energy required to fuel our workflow. We practice digital sobriety by building systems—with or without code and AI—to automate repetitive business tasks. This ensures we don’t burn electricity (or human hours) on manual work that can be done more efficiently by an automated system. Human hours at Drych Digital are strictly reserved for creating and delivering our clients’ projects. Everything else is handled by our automated systems, including: taking appointments and logging form records instantly, protecting against bot attacks and monitoring site uptime 24/7, automatically compressing media to keep sites lean and fast, syncing records and managing invoices without manual entries, and automatically assigning tasks to team members and creating project schedules.
3. Continuous Team Training:
Our agency is inspired by INCO, who laid the groundwork for our transition from a marketing agency to a carbon-negative agency. INCO is a global leader in the sustainable economy, offering Green Digital Skills which is a high-impact program that equips professionals with the knowledge to reduce the environmental impact of technology. 60% of our team have completed this training, while our founder is currently progressing through another INCO Green Pathways program. This ensures that from the leadership down, Drych Digital is at the absolute forefront of ethical, low-carbon digital innovation.
4. Purposeful Design and Strategy:
As an addition to our creative expertise, we use data and UX-based knowledge to anchor our designs and strategies. Our goal is twofold: to achieve your business goals (and objectives) and to eliminate waste. We ensure your users can find what they need faster. So less time spent searching means less time consuming energy—and a better conversion rate for your business. This same “efficiency-first” logic applies to our strategies, ads, and copy: intentional design and instant clarity. We use data to guide every creative decision and messaging to reduce your customers’ cognitive load (and digital load) so they get the gist in seconds.
5. Optimised Media and “Intentional” Tradeoff:
While we treat digital weight with the same scrutiny as physical waste, we acknowledge that as a creative agency, there are times we must make a trade-off. In this instance, a trade-off is a conscious decision to prioritise high-end brand impact while finding technical ways to mitigate its footprint. Take our homepage, for example. Our clients love the animated globe and the fact that it orbits, but we know it adds significant weight to the page. Currently, it is the only page on our entire site with an “F ranking” for digital carbon. We chose this “trade-off” in order to create a stunning, immersive first impression to satisfy our clients. However, we didn’t stop there. We engineered an eco-sleep logic that automatically pauses the globe’s animation after 30 seconds of inactivity. This ensures it doesn’t burn your energy or drain your device’s battery life unnecessarily while the tab is idle.
6. Paperless Workflows and Remote-First Culture:
We always say: the greenest commute is the one that never happens. Drych Digital operates with a Remote-First culture, allowing us to tap into global talent without the environmental cost of daily commuting or the energy-heavy heating and cooling of a traditional physical office. While we maintain virtual offices strictly for the eventuality that a client requests an in-person meeting, our core operations are fully digital. From our initial discovery calls to final project delivery, no single print in sight. Automated appointments, secure cloud-based collaboration, e-signatures, digital contracts, automated invoices, e-receipts, dynamic service tracking, etc.
7. Conscious and Ethical Sourcing:
We are deeply intentional about where our money goes—what we invest in. We value equipment that is efficient, durable, and easy to repair. By investing in hardware that lasts, we avoid the cycle of frequent replacement that leads to equipment breaking down and ending up in a landfill, where it ultimately pollutes the soil. We take it further by prioritising brands like ASUS that are committed to a sustainable and circular economy—prioritising reuse, repairability, and minimal packaging. Lastly, to reduce the carbon emissions caused by long-distance travel and logistics, we source our vendors locally. We consider it a significant bonus when these partners demonstrate ethical labour practices and environmental stewardship.
8. Privacy and E-waste:
While our automated systems log essential information to keep your business running smoothly, we treat that data with the highest level of respect and security. At Drych Digital, we protect our clients’ privacy by encrypting all sensitive information and storing it exclusively in secure, private channels. Every quarter, we perform a deep clean of our storage by clearing our emails, deleting unnecessary files, archiving essential files, and reducing our stored data to the absolute minimum. This serves a triple purpose: we save energy and electricity required to power and cool “ghost data” in data centers, we regain our storage for new projects and reduce the risk of any potential data breach. Your data is used strictly to provide you with our services and products. It is NEVER be sold or used as a product for third-party data mining.
Why We Do It
We have learned that the traditional “burn-and-build” model of industry makes the earth increasingly uninhabitable for everyone. At Drych Digital, we refuse to pretend that business-as-usual is an option.
While we understand that stopping every single form of emission is practically impossible, we believe that imperfect action is better than perfect inaction. We have a responsibility to our home. Every sustainable decision we make is a step toward making the world a better place, one less carbon at a time.
